EMBASSY OF THE
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Manila, Philippines
January 15, 2013
AMBASSADOR
The United States of America and the Philippines ushered in 2013 with new hope -- for mutual understanding, greater environmental responsibility, better quality of life, and high-standard educational opportunities for all people. In 2001, the U.S. Embassy in Manila launched its Thomasite Centennial Project - which marked the first 100 years after the arrival of the "Thomasites" in the Philippines in 1901. 540 American teachers set sail from San Francisco on July 23, 1901, on board the U.S. transport Thomas. They were assigned to schools across the archipelago to perform a challenging task in the newly-acquired U.S. colony. Hired by the United States Civil Service Commission, the Thomasites, as they were later to be called, fanned out to the provinces to teach and begin the experiment of preparing Filipinos for nationhood. One of the first and far-reaching decisions made by the American educational authorities for the Philippines was to give all instruction in the English language. This decision turned out to be perhaps the greatest single unifying factor during the American period.
A Recollection as Centennial Draws Near
Capiz High School. The Summer of My Life.
by: Gregorio A. Atienza

Like most pre-teen boys in our town, I never experienced living away from my family. My parents enrolled me in elementary schools in Roxas where I have always felt safe and secure. Roxas was home with family and childhood friends. I suppose like other kids my age I grudgingly went to school eagerly looking forward to the summer vacation at the end of the school term.
